Mystic Messenger is a new South Korean otome or visual novel video game designed and developed by Cheritz. It was launched on July 8th, 2021 exclusively for iOS and August 19, 2021 exclusively for Android. The game itself is described as a "choose your own adventure" game and is available in Korean, English, Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. Below is my Mystic Messenger review, including some concept art, and my personal opinions on the game.

 

Unlike other mystery/adventure games where you go around solving puzzles or exploring areas to find clues, in Mystic Messenger you are a guest in the hotel of an organization called Mirrortac. You will be able to contact your friends/family by entering their codes and clicking on "mails". From there, you'll have access to their emails, messages, and other activity they've been doing. After visiting all of their rooms, you will also be able to view their activities and progress. When you level up, you'll receive "emails" from your guests which will give you detailed information on the things they've done and will unlock/close the corresponding puzzle.

 

At the bottom of the screen there is a clock symbol, which means you are currently "not in your room" - if you try to go back to your "room", you will receive a "time out". The goal of the game is to be a member of the raising organization, and reach the goal by the deadline. You will have a list of mission objectives, which vary depending on the game. For example, in The Witch's Code, the objective is to help Rika create a eulogy for her recently deceased grandmother.

As mentioned earlier, each character has different characteristics which will reflect their personality, including how many episodes they can be sent messages in. The overall goal of the game is to send the most messages to the least number of members/viewers/friends. To earn points and unlock new messages, you must answer as many questions as possible with correct answers. The character you are playing as will have unique features and abilities based on their gender and the age of the recipient. Some of these characters include Kari, who use flashing images; Jade, who use special music videos; Cherry, who is a virtual assistant and teacher; and Yasmin, who provide psychic readings and help in other ways through her articles.

The "correct answers" feature is used for choosing pictures for your messages. The more correct answers you have for questions about the Personage of Seong Hee, the better your chances will be of getting a reply.
